Doh! Prettified URL’s can make your cookies disappear January 9, 2009

I was a bit puzzled that my home grown solution for tracking conversions from ad campaigns wasn’t working at all, all the while Google Analytics was telling me that I did indeed have a couple of conversions from Google AdWords.

Then it hit me, I had made myself guilty of cardinal stupidity – Cookies are path context sensitive, and my landing page with a prettified URL like this /page/parameter/value meant that all other pages where completely oblivious to the Cookies created, because they where at a lower path scope.

Doh!
I guess the lesson is that prettified URL’s are nice, but sometimes you have to fall back to the old ugly ways of /page?parameter=value
